First of all sorry for the format- I dislike Excel
As for reading the results- in bold is the class and then finish place. Then total time including penalties, and the last number is the total penalties. Subtract the penalty amount in seconds and that will tell you your raw time.
Thanks so much to everyone that participated and especially to all of the volunteers!!!!Blackfoot River Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07284556670275640113noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3873953754710887.post-70513235321678535422018-07-12T09:33:00.002-07:002018-07-12T09:35:05.075-07:00Downriver Results

Most of the course is just moving water, however there are a few minor rapids to negotiate. The rapids are not technical, just a few waves and rocks to dodge, if you want to keep your boat dry. This is a really great stretch of river for a downriver race as it is suitable for any type of paddle powered craft, canoe-kayak-sup, and beginner to advanced paddlers will enjoy the course. The fastest boats may complete the race in around an hour with the slower boats often times around an hour and twenty minutes, this of course depends on water flow, maybe a little longer if you are a more relaxed 'racer'. Registration will be held prior to the start of the event, usually around 9:30am, until about 10:30am which is when the racer meeting is held with the race starting at 11am, hopefully. The race starts in 3 heats, with the Recreational class(es) going first, the standard class second, and the Race class starting last. This usually works out so that most of the boats get to the finish line around a similar time, making the finish exciting to watch. Your boat class is determined by your boat type/length (we will help with this at the race site). Sprint Race- July 7 4pm Roundup Rapid mile mark 26.7 Hwy 200 (Slalom course site). Class II-II+ Rapid. This race is always different every year. Some years its boater cross style other years it has been head to head or one at a time or even giant slalom style, maybe even an upstream race ;)(which we have done in the past and it was awesome). I always leave it open to the racers to vote on and help decide what they would enjoy more. Generally it is a race from the top of the slalom course to the bottom, fastest time or boater wins, usually done in multiple heats. This is open to canoes, kayaks and sup, each as a different class or we could do it all together, again this event is ever changing. Registration for this event can be done in the morning at the downriver start or at Roundup before the event, usually starting at 3pm or so( I have to cleanup after downriver and get to Roundup). Slalom Race- July 8 10am Roundup Rapid mile mark 26.7 Hwy 200. Class II-II+ Rapid 15-20 gate course. Negotiate upstream and downstream gates from start of the course to the finish line. Making your way through gates that are either going downstream or in an eddy going back upstream. Touching a gate adds 5 seconds to your time and missing a gate adds 50 seconds to your time. Classes are separated by canoe (solo, tandem, decked(c1)), kayak (play boat, creek boat, race) and SUP (stand up paddleboard), and sometimes a swimmer class ;). 2 runs per class, best time is kept, fastest time wins. Usually this race takes all day, or a large part of the day. You may race in more than one class (solo canoe, creek boat etc...). We always need folks to judge gates so if you have friends or family, or maybe when you are not racing you might watch a gate station. Because this race is time consuming we will have the racers meeting at 10 and start races at 10:30. After the races are all complete you get your scores and we find out the winners. Slalom Course construction- July 6(Friday) 10:30am. We will be constructing the course the Thurs. of the event. This is a big undertaking and we always need more hands on deck. If you have helped in the past we could use your know how, if you have never helped in the past we can guide you and would appreciate the person power. This usually takes 6-8 hours to complete. Often times we have folks show up right away and others show up later in the day. This works well as the second wave brings some more energy to help finish it out. If you are interested in helping with this please email me for more details blackfootriverchallenge@gmail.com. Food Drive/ Fundraiser for Missoula Food Bank- this whole event is a food drive/fundraiser for the Missoula Food Bank. All of the proceeds from entry fees and sponsor donations are donated directly to the Missoula Food Bank. We also do a non-perishable food drive during the event. Please bring any amount of non-perishable food items to donate. We will have bins on site that will be taken to the Food Bank with the proceeds. Entry Fees- Unfortunately we do have to charge for the event. The fees do go to a good cause though (see above). 1 event is $20. 2 or more events is $25. (downriver + slalom = $25, slalom only = $20, downriver + sprint + slalom = $25). Registration can be done on site, however if you want to register early please email me and I can send you a registration form that you could mail back to me. July 7-8Hey all the dates have been chose!! July 7 and 8 is what has been chosen for this year. We should have a good runoff this year (it has already been big) and we should have plenty of water left in July as well. The past few years the flow has been low but very fun for the weekend of the event. I suspect it may be a little higher this year, but even if it is low the last few years have shown that we can run the event at pretty much any water flow (We generally error towards lower flows as it is more forgiving and usually warmer). Hope to see you all out again this year...This will be the 10th Annual!!!Blackfoot River Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07284556670275640113noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3873953754710887.post-7124283503422608072017-08-31T09:36:00.000-07:002017-08-31T09:36:02.077-07:002017 ResultsFinally Right!?

This years event is scheduled to be July 22-23. About a month later than normal, but that is how it worked out this year. The water has been high all spring and that means that we should have water for a good portion of the Summer. Also, having the event later means the weather should be nicer and the water should be warmer. Sorry for the absence and no info for so long, but life is busy and honestly we have been boating so much that I haven't had my ducks in a row for most of the Spring ;) Hope to see many familiar and some new faces out on the river this year. Please feel free to email blackfootriverchallenge@gmail.com with any questions. I will be posting more info in the near future as well. FYI the past info posted on the this blog will pertain to this year as well...times and location are usually the same every year.Blackfoot River Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07284556670275640113noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3873953754710887.post-41819578826230932512016-06-06T16:01:00.002-07:002016-06-13T12:10:41.480-07:00Thanks to our Sponsors and donors!!I have to say thanks to those that have already helped with this years event ,it really would be very hard to do without their support:

Welcome back to boating season. This years event will be the weekend of June 18-19. With lots of other events in the area the last weekend of June (which is the usual weekend) we have decided to move it up a week. With the potential lack of summer flows, much like last year, this weekend should provide a little bit more water as well. Hope you can all make it this year, which will be year 8!! Check back for any updates

In the end the money they donate ultimately goes to the Missoula Food Bank to help those in need. So please say thanks and support those that help make this event possible-
The Trail Head- with locations downtown and at Southgate Mall,
Black Dog Construction- for all of your home improvement needs,
Styles-Areiza family- they are just great folks :),
Also every year we do a raffle, that way everyone wins, we usually get some really great prizes to give away for this too. this year we have items from the Trail Head, NRS, Books from Doug Ammons, a print from Tom Yule, items from black Coffee Roasting, some good stuff from Big Sky Brewing, and coffee from Montana Coffee Traders, and a nice PFD from Astral!! I can't say thank you enough to all of these people and organizations for helping out with this years event, THANK YOU!!!Blackfoot River Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07284556670275640113noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3873953754710887.post-65913466100976727032015-06-22T10:25:00.000-07:002015-06-22T10:25:23.988-07:00Slalom Course construction and volunteeringHey all!! This Thursday the 25th we will be hanging the slalom course...we need helpers :) I will be there at 10:30am and would love to have some extra hands- 6 to 8 people is really ideal. If you can come up at any time any help is greatly appreciated. The site is roundup rapid on the Blackfoot at about mile mark 26. The post below this one has lots more useful info or feel free to email me with any questions. What to bring- gloves, leatherman/knife, sturdy shoes, water and some snacks, sunscreen, glasses and a hat. If you are a paddler feel free to bring a boat for when the course is done. This takes the better part of the day, I don't expect people to stay all day...unless you want to. Usually some folks come up after work to help with the late wave, this actually helps a lot so if you can't come early come later.
As for volunteers for the race, we can always use more gate judges and timers. email me if you are interested in being a volunteer.
It is supposed to be hot this weekend so please get hydrated and have proper sun protection...hope to see lots of familiar faces and some new ones too!!!Blackfoot River Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07284556670275640113noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3873953754710887.post-48902009465095689762015-06-11T12:13:00.001-07:002015-06-22T10:16:37.173-07:00Useful InfoDownriver Race- June 27 10:30AM Johnsrud Park to Weigh Station access, 11 mile class I+-II-. Most of the course is just moving water, however there are a few minor rapids to negotiate. The rapids are not technical, just a few waves and rocks to dodge, if you want to keep your boat dry. This is a really great stretch of river for a downriver race as it is suitable for any type of paddle powered craft, canoe-kayak-sup, and begginer to advanced paddlers will enjoy the course. The fastest boats may complete the race in around an hour with the slower boats often times around an hour and twenty minutes, maybe a little longer if you are a more relaxed 'racer'. Sprint Race- June 27 4pm Roundup Rapid mile mark 26.7 Hwy 200 (Slalom course site). Class II-II+ Rapid. This race is always different every year. Some years its boater cross style other years it has been head to head or one at a time or even giant slalom style, maybe even an upstream race ;). Slalom Race- June 28 10am Roundup Rapid mile mark 26.7 Hwy 200. Classes are seperated by canoe (solo, tandem, decked(c1)), kayak (playboat, creekboat, race) and SUP (stand up paddleboard), and sometimes a swimmer class ;). 2 runs per class, best time is kept, fastest time wins. Usually this race takes all day, or a large part of the day. You may race in more than one class (solo canoe, creekboat etc...). We always need folks to judge gates so if you have freinds or family, or maybe when you are not racing you might watch a gate station. Because this race is time consuming we will have the racers meeting at 10 and start races at 10:30. After the races are all complete you get your scores and we find out the winners. Slalom Course construction- June 25(Thursday) 10:30am. Fee includes event t-shirt, fun, a good feeling and we usually have some swag/prizes to give away (no guarantees on this though). Registration can be done on site, however if you want to register early please email me and I can send you a registration form that you could mail back to me. The dates for this years event will (should) be June 27-28 :) Make plans to be there and prepare for a great time. The usual event breakdown is Downriver race on Saturday the 27th usually starts around 11am. Sprint race held that Saturday the 27th in the afternoon, maybe 4pm. Then on Sunday the 28th we will have the Slalom race. This event usually takes the better part of the day and starts maybe between 10 and 11am. Check back for details as we get closer to race dates. We usually try to hang the slalom course that Thursday (25th), which takes all day and then some. We can always use more help to set the course, so let me know if you are interested. We also always need some volunteer help for timing and such. Please email w/ any questions at all- blackfootriverchallenge@gmail.comBlackfoot River Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07284556670275640113noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3873953754710887.post-52403055568630964202014-07-11T16:26:00.000-07:002014-07-11T16:26:39.524-07:002014 DonationAnother fun event is in the books! The water level was around 4200 CFS for the weekends event, which made for a great downriver race and a sporty slalom. We had great weather and a great group of racers. All in all the donation was down a little from years past but I still consider it a success. The Missoula Food Bank received 50lbs of food and $1150 in total, which will go along way to helping those that need assistance. Thanks to those that make this event happen every year... The competitors, volunteers and especially the sponsors- The Trail Head, Ameriprise Financial- Chet Morris, and Black Dog Construction- John Gallagher. Big Sky Brewing threw in some goodies for raffle prizes too. I do expect the water to be a little higher this year than in years past, but don't fret, more water = More fun! That means for the downriver race the rocks will be that much more covered. And for the Slalom, we will get to set the course a little different than years past. We never set the slalom course too hard, so if you are not sure if you can paddle a slalom course this is a great event to try out, and if you miss a gate it really doesn't matter. The downriver is suitable for all skill levels, and we always have the rule on the water that if any boat tips over, if you are near you are required to help. We very much encourage safety at this event! If you have any questions at all please email me blackfootriverchallenge@gmail.com

The final totals came out to be: $1200 donated and 150 lbs of food. What that means is you all have helped to provide 608 meals to those in need!!! I don't know about you all but that makes me very happy and gives me that warm fuzzy feeling inside. Thanks you all so much, again, for making this years event a success. Looking forward to next year already.Blackfoot River Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07284556670275640113noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3873953754710887.post-68909571039694054512013-07-06T12:33:00.001-07:002013-07-06T12:33:28.739-07:002013 ReultsWell it was a great weekend this year for the event! Saturday-
Downriver race- Start Johnsrud Park, 10:30 AM racers meeting and registration close. 11AM race start. Finish at Weigh Station, awards and times after all have finished.
Sprint race- Start Roundup Rapid above Roundup FAS, 4PM racers meeting and registration close. 4:30PM race start. This race will run from the top of the slalom course to the bottom of the course. Maybe it will be boatercross style or head to head, or maybe just a straight sprint. Show up, give me your thoughts on what you would like and we'll go form there.
Sunday-
Slalom race(s)- Start Roundup Rapid, 10:00 AM Racers meeting and registration closes. 10:30 am race start. Midway break/ Lunch.
Times and awards after all races are finished and slalom course has been completely taken down :(.
Thursday-
Slalom Course setup- 10:00AM meet at Roundup with work gloves, a multitool/knife, dirtyable clothing and maybe some snacks for yourself. This takes all day so feel free to come up in the afternoon and help if you can't make it in the morning. Bring a boat and paddle the course when it is finished. The more the merrier. Usually takes 8 hours to construct the course.
Hope to see you all there, as always email with questions--- blackfootriverchallenge@gmail.comBlackfoot River Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07284556670275640113noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3873953754710887.post-54132553492414027962013-06-09T13:31:00.001-07:002013-06-19T18:06:29.824-07:00River Flow infoHard to tell what the level will be exactly, but I am thinking around 2500 cfs, which is a really great level for both the downriver and slalom races!! here is a link to the current flow-- Blackfoot River Flow
And a link to the flow forecast info-- Flow Forecast
Should be another great event this year, hope to see you there.
Update... After further review, the water is going down more rapidly than expected, which is A OK. This means warmer water and more rocks to play with. In the end it doesn't really matter what the flow is, because it is always fun. With the rain that is expected over the next few days and today's rain, I suspect the river will go up a bit and then taper off again...the new projected level (from me) will be 1800-2000.Blackfoot River Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07284556670275640113noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3873953754710887.post-29138073079850236102013-06-03T19:38:00.001-07:002013-06-06T08:51:01.006-07:00Thanks to the SponsorsThese organizations/ people are the backbone of making this event happen!!
